Jess shares her thought for the week; new mercies every morning:
This week I’ve been thinking a lot about moving forward. What it looks like and how easy it is to carry our yesterday into your today.
Maybe for you it’s about a conversation you had last month that you just can’t shake off your shoulders. Maybe it is the driver last week that really annoyed you that bit too much and you expressed your anger in a way that you probably shouldn’t have. I know I’m guilty of that one myself.
Maybe you made a mistake at work that you just can’t seem to get over, or maybe it’s something much bigger.
It can be really easy to allow what happened in our yesterday to affect how we see our today. We carry guilt and disappointment or even worry about what tomorrow might bring.
But I love what Lamentations 3:22-23 says. It says this:
“The steadfast love the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.”

Your version might say:
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassion never fail.”
Here we see that Jeremiah remembered the fact when Jerusalem was beat down and defeated that they were not consumed. Even in the severity of what God’s people were enduring, there is evidence of God’s compassion and that they’re new every morning.
I think sometimes we forget just how amazing that news is.
God doesn’t wake up the next morning and decide that he’s had enough of us, that we’re just too much bolder and he can’t be boldered anymore. No, his mercy doesn’t run out because we struggled or we failed or because we’ve had a bad day or a bad week or a bad year.
No matter how bad the past day was, the past week was, God’s people can look to this new morning with faith and new hope.
Every morning that you get to open up your eyes, that you get to wake up, that you get to go about your day, it’s a reminder that God is faithful and therefore we can praise him, that his compassion is still there so we can trust him and that his grace is still enough so that we can rely on him.
Whatever yesterday might have looked like for you, we get to step into today knowing that God is still with us.
At the end of this verse it reminds us that our response to this grace news must be to respond in that same way that Jeremiah did.
So as you go into this week, whatever you’re carrying, remember that you don’t have to carry the guilt or shame of yesterday into today because God’s mercies are new every morning. Great is his faithfulness.
