Forgiveness

Eden shares his thought for the week on forgiveness:

God touches on the importance of forgiveness at many points throughout the Bible. For example, had Jesus not had a heart of forgiveness within Him, the lady caught in adultery would have been put to death in John chapters 7 and 8. Had the father of the prodigal son not had a heart posture of forgiveness, his son would have never stopped feeding with and laying down with pigs. And of course, without forgiveness, we would not have salvation and eternal life that is destined for those who believe in Jesus when we pass away from this world.

We’re told all throughout the Bible to forgive those who wrong us, to turn the other cheek, and to not bear a grudge or keep unforgiveness in our hearts. In Colossians 3:13, it says,

Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

Colossians 3:13

So why, then, does it feel hard to let go of the frustration that can be caused when someone’s rude to you, cuts you off in traffic, or causes harm emotionally or physically to us?

I think it’s our humanness which can keep us in the spirit of anger or frustration. But the Lord knows this, and He also helps us with how to deal with those feelings of frustration and to foster a forgiving heart.

In Jeremiah 31:34, for example, it says,

For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.

Jeremiah 31:34

As well as in Matthew chapter 6, verses 14 and 15, it says,

If you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. If you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Matthew 6:14-15

So I pray for the person watching this that you, too, will be able to forgive those who have wronged you in the past, those who have harmed you or upset you, especially when it’s difficult to do so. Instead, turn to the examples that God has given us to be able to forgive and move forward with the greater plans that the Lord has for us in our lives.

God bless.
