Esther shares her thought for the week; Joseph, the silent Father:
In two months, it will be Father’s Day. For some people, it’s a joyful occasion to spoil their fathers. For others, it can be a bittersweet day for many different reasons. Father’s Day reminds us how important fathers are, often in ways that aren’t always noticed or recognised. My own dad, God rest his soul, wasn’t really into Father’s Day. It wasn’t something he grew up with. But I always made an effort to make him feel special on that day.
As Father’s Day fastly approaches, I’ve been thinking about Jesus, especially His earthly father, Joseph. We naturally talk about Mary, and rightly so. But Joseph seems almost invisible in the story of Jesus. Even today, when a baby is born, most of the attention is on the mother and the child. Conversations revolve around the pregnancy, the excitement, the baby shower, and the birth. But what about the child’s father?
That question made me reflect on Joseph and the quiet but important role he played in God’s plan. When you read the Gospels, Joseph never speaks a single recorded word. Not one. And yet, he plays a vital part in the story of Jesus’ life. Joseph gives us a powerful picture of what faithful fatherhood can look like.
First, Joseph chose mercy. When he discovered that Mary was pregnant, he could have reacted with anger or public judgment. Instead, he chose compassion and protection, even before he fully understood what God was doing.
Second, Joseph chose faith. When the angel appeared to him in a dream, he believed God, even though the situation must have seemed confusing and difficult to understand.
Third, Joseph chose obedience. He didn’t just hear God’s instructions; he acted on them. He took Mary as his wife, he named the child Jesus, and he followed God’s guidance step by step. The Bible gives us a powerful picture of this in Matthew 2:13–14: The angel instructed Joseph to “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt… So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt.”
Joseph didn’t delay. In the middle of the night, he got up, took Mary and the child, and protected the family God had entrusted to him.
These three choices: mercy, faith, and obedience, shaped the kind of father Joseph became and helped protect and nurture the child who would change the world.
So today, if you’re waiting for a prayer to be answered, or for a promise to be fulfilled, perhaps Joseph gives us a pattern to follow. Let’s ask God to help us walk in mercy, stand firm in faith, and live in obedience, even when we don’t yet see the whole picture. The world may not always notice the quiet faithfulness of a father, but God does.
And just like Joseph, faithful fathers help shape lives and protect God’s purposes for the next generation.
Fathers matter. And Joseph mattered deeply.
