George shares his thought for the week; using technology to deepen our relationship with God.

I remember when I was a teenager and I first experienced a Sony Walkman. My friend had got one—I couldn’t afford one—and he let me try it. I remember saying to him, “It’s like having a concert in your head.” It was an amazing experience, the first time you could sort of make music portable and for it to go with you, whether it was cassette tapes.

But I also remember heading off to university not long afterwards and having to take a huge ghetto blaster with me—you know, double speakers, double tape decks, and those cassettes—so that I would have some music whilst I was at university. When you think about the extent to which technology has moved on in those intervening 30 or 40 years, it’s amazing when we consider that what we ironically call our phones now does so much for us and allows music to be portable 24/7.

You know, there’s so much in the news about how technology is being used for bad things, for evil, for corrupting society, and there’s no excuse for any of that—don’t get me wrong. But there’s so much opportunity to do good things with the technology that we’ve got these days. We’ve got the Bible on our apps and on our phones, available to us 24/7. We can access it at any time. We’ve got access to great teaching, and if you haven’t access to great teaching, then maybe the All Nations YouTube channel and podcast archive would be a good place for you to start your journey on that.

And of course, we have access to great music. Even like now, when I’m on a dog walk, I’ve got a playlist on my phone which I’ve called “Dog Walk,” which just has some really uplifting and meaningful worship songs that I can play. I can spend time when I’m walking the dog just talking to God and hearing from God and worshiping God. It’s an amazing opportunity just to use the time, to redeem the time in a way.

So instead of all of that doom scrolling that you might be doing, why don’t you make a resolution to use your technology to deepen your relationship with Jesus through the resources that are available online for you?
